Research progress on biomarkers of work-related musculoskeletal disorders

  • Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are a common subset of occupational diseases with a high prevalence and a serious impact on health, which result in heavy economic loss, thus are an urgent problem to be solved in occupational health research field worldwide. Since WMSDs are chronic cumulative diseases affected by a variety of risk factors and their pathogenesis is not yet clear, their identification is difficult in clinical and occupational environment and currently mainly relies on questionnaire survey and physical examination. However, there are inherent limitations of these methods. Thus, it is imperative to develop objective detection and evaluation indicators based on biomarkers. The study of WMSDs biomarkers will have a positive effect on the early diagnosis and health monitoring of WMSDs. In this paper, WMSDs biomarkers were simply divided into three categories:tissue metabolite biomarkers, inflammatory biomarkers, and pain-related biomarkers, and the recent progress of related research at home and abroad were reviewed.
