Tobacco Control Responsibility and Education Ability of Staff in a Medical School

Abstract: Objective To investigate tobacco control responsibility identification and tobacco control education ability in medical school staff.

Methods Using stratified proportional sampling method, eight departments and four affiliated hospitals of a medical university were asked to a questionnaire survey on tobacco control responsibility and education ability.

Results In this study, 796 questionnaires were distributed, 796 questionnaires were returned, and 745 returned questionnaires were valid. The smokers who often smoked in the presence of colleagues accounted for 60.2% of total subjects; the non-smoking women who minded others smoking nearby accounted for 95.0%; 60.4% smokers discouraged implementing smoking ban in office; more than 80% staff agreed not to smoke in the presence of patients, students, and colleagues, as well as being role models of non-smoker. In the past year, about 20%-50% of the teachers reported they had delivered the harm of tobacco and turned down smoking in classrooms and provided help for smoking cessation. Not persuading others to quit smoking was largely due to lacking tobacco control skills.

Conclusion The staff present positive attitudes to smoking control and insufficient actions. Therefore, it is urgent to improve their responsibility and professional skills of smoking control.
