Differences in height and weight among 3 089 pairs of twins in Shanghai

Abstract: Objective To describe the differences in weight, height, and body mass index (BMI) among twins categorized by zygosity and age, and provide evidence for assessing the impacts of heredity and environment on growth and development.

Methods Based on the Shanghai Twin Cohort Sub-project of the China Environmental Epidemiology Cohort Study conducted in 2013, data of weight, height, and BMI were collected by household investigation. The differences and difference ratios of the three indicators among the sampled twins categorized by zygosity and age were analyzed by ANOVA.

Results A total of 3 089 pairs of twins were included in the study, including 1 772 pairs of monozygotic twins and 1 317 pairs of dizygotic twins. Apart from the male twins aged 60 years and above, the differences in weight, height, and BMI of monozygotic twins were smaller than the differences of dizygotic twins in all age groups (P < 0.05). The difference ratios of the three indicators among twins aged 20 years and below did not vary with age (P>0.05).

Conclusion Genetic factors play a more important role than environmental factors in weight and height.
