Concerns on nutrition and lifestyle to comprehensively promote physical and psychological health among Chinese population

    Abstract:

The connotation of health is pluralistic. Physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being are regarded as multidimensional complete health. A healthy diet, as one cornerstone of health, is the basis of complete health. Although China is one of the countries with a heavy burden of depression and the prevalence of depression in the elderly aged 65 and above is as high as 10%-15% in China, mental health problems-mood disorders-are often overlooked. Due to the limitation of interdisciplinary development, there are few studies on the relationship between diet, nutrition, lifestyle, and depression in China. The Community-based Cohort Study on Nervous System Diseases (CCSNSD) was brought forward to establish community populationbased cohorts of epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease, widely collect data on diet, lifestyle, cognition, and depression, and provide support for the interdisciplinary research on nutrition and neuropsychology. Using the baseline data of the CCSNSD, this special column investigated the associations of chocolate intake, physical activity, and serum uric acid level with the prevalence of depressive symptoms among the people aged 55 and above, as well as the relationship between blood pressure and cognitive function. In the future, the baseline and follow-up visit data can be further exploited to conduct longitudinal analyses on the impact of diet and nutrition on the risks of depression symptoms and cognitive impairment.
