Intensities of Power Frequency Electric Fields in a 500kV Air Insulated Substation

  • Objective To measure the intensities of power frequency electric fields in a 500 kV air insulated substation.

Methods Intensities of power frequency electric fields at selected workstations were measured with PMM 8053A/PMM EHP-50C instrument in Germany. A layout coordinate system of substation plan was constructed to display space distribution of power frequency electric field intensity. Test results were compared with the relevant standards.

Results A total of 554 workstations were selected for power frequency electric fields measurement, including 296 workstations in the 500 kV power distribution area. In the 500kV power distribution area, 17 workstations reported intensity values greater than 10kV/m, 137 workstations did greater than or equal to 5 kV/m and less than 10 kV/m. In the 220 kV, 35 kV, and main transformer areas, the intensities of all workstations were less than 10 kV/m.

Conclusion Power frequency electric field intensities greater than 10 kV/m are found in some workstations of the selected substation. Improving the patrol route and reducing exposure time may help to reduce its' health impacts on workers.
