Disinfection Effects and Ozone Concentration Changes in Surgery Operating Rooms After Varied Ultraviolet Protocols

  • Objective To evaluate the disinfection effects of ultraviolet (UV) lamps with different powers and for different durations in surgery operating rooms, and to provide reference for disinfection optimization.

Methods Two surgery operating rooms with same size, same orientation, and at the same floor of a hospital were selected. UV lamps of 30 W and 40 W were placed in the two rooms respectively. The changes in total bacterial count, sterilization rate, and ozone concentration in the air of the operating rooms were recorded at various time points of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60minutes.

Results After using the 30W UV lamp radiation for 10min, the air total bacterial count were 4 cfu/m3, and the sterilization rate was 95.3%. After using the 40 W UV lamp radiation for 10 min, the sterilization rate was 95.6%. After 30min, the sterilization rates were both 100.0% for the two rooms. The air ozone concentration in the surgery operating room using a 40 W lamp for 20 minutes was statistically higher than that in the room using a 30 W lamp (P<0.05). After 30 min, the ozone concentrations in the air of both rooms exceeded 0.3 mg/3.

Conclusion The 30 W and the 40 W UV lamps show similar disinfection effects, but the 40 W lamp produces more ozone. A preferable UV light sterilization time is 30min.
