Hyperuricemia Prevalence and Related Early Renal Injury in Male Civil Aviation Pilots

  • Objective To analyse the prevalence of hyperuricemia (HUA) and its risk factors among male civil aviation pilots, and to examine the relationship between pilots' hyperuricemia and early renal injury.

Methods The medical data of pilots accepting physical examination in Beijing Civial Aviation General Hospital in 2013 were analysed.Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay was applied to detect early renal injury indicators including urinary α1-microglobulin (α1-MG),β2-microglobulin (β2-MG),cystatin C (CysC),N-acetylglucosamine (NAG),retinol binding protein (RBP),and compared the differences of selected indicators in the pilots with or without HUA.

Results A total of 97 out of 385 pilots (25.2%) were diagnosed with hyperuricuria. There was no significant difference in the HUA prevalence across age groups (P > 0.05).The results of logistic regression analysis showed the risk factors for hyperuricemia included high body mass index (BMI),hyperlipemia, and hyperbilirubinemia (P=0.001,0.004,and 0.009,respectively).Compared with the normouricemia group, the levels of urinary α1-MG,CysC,RBP,and NAG were significantly higher in the HUA group.

Conclusion HUA is a severe metabolic disease in male civil aviation pilots. The prevalence of HUA is obviously higher in male civil aviation pilots than in general population or military pilots, and shows no age differences.High BMI,hyper lipemia, hyper bilirubinemia are the risk factors of HUA,while hyperglycemia may have a potential correlation with HUA.The pilots with HUA show varying degrees of early renal injurygroup
