Investigation of Pollution of Phthalate Esters and Bisphenols in Source Water and Drinking Water in Hefei City, China

  • Objective To investigate the seasonal variations of seven phthalate esters (PAEs) and three bisphenols (BPs) in source water and drinking water from two waterworks in Hefei City in three different water periods.
Methods Ten sampling sites were selected representing the source water and drinking water from A waterworks and B waterworks. Samples were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for seven PAEs and ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for three BPs after solid phase extraction.
Results Benzyl butyl phthalate, bis (2-n-butoxyethyl) phthalate, bisphenol B, and bisphenol F were not detected in all water samples. The concentrations of ∑ PAEs detected in source water, finished water, and tap water were in the range of 2.73-8.14μg/L, 1.91-5.06μg/L, and 1.12-6.59μg/L in three different water periods of the two waterworks, respectively, while the levels of bisphenol A (BPA) ranged from 9.57 to 15.70ng/L, nd to 2.74ng/L, and 1.03 to 3.01ng/L, respectively. The concentrations of ∑ PAEs in different water periods were ranked from high to low as wet season > dry season > level season, while dry season > level season > wet season for BPA. No significant differences in PAEs and BPA were found between A and B waterworks.
Conclusion The source and drinking water in Hefei are polluted by PAEs and BPA to different degrees, but the level of pollution is lower than that in other regions as previously reported.
