AIDS Discrimination in Female Entertainment Workers in Minhang District of Shanghai

  • Objective To study attitudes to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) among female entertainment workers (FEWs) and factors that may influence it.

Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among 125 FEWs randomly selected by multi-stage cluster sampling method from 22 entertainment locales in 2 communities of Minhang District.

Results FEWs working in smaller entertainment locales, with higher monthly income and less points in AIDS/sexually transmitted diseases (STD) knowledge survey were more concerned about HIV infection. Unconditional logistic analysis indicated that AIDS/STD knowledge, self-concern about HIV infection, age and education had little impact on HIV discrimination.

Conclusion The respondents present lower discrimination for AIDS/HIV victims compared with other populations.
