Prevalence of Diabetes among Residents in a Town of Qingpu District, Shanghai

  • Objective To determine the prevalence and risk factors of diabetes among 35-74 years old residents in a town of Qingpu District in Shanghai.

Methods A cross-sectional survey for diabetes was performed among 1 000 local residents of 35-74 years old from a village by a stratified random sampling approach. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was set for the screening strategy.

Results The standardized prevalences of diabetes mellitus, impaired glucose tolerance, impaired fast glucose and impaired glucose regulation were 7.17%, 1.14%, 10.6% and 11.8% repectively. The diabetes mellitus prevalence of female residents was higher than those of male (11.3% vs. 6.7%, P < 0.05). The prevalence of diabetes increased along with age. Age, sex, obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and family history were the risk factors of diabetes mellitus.

Conclusion The prevalence of diabetes mellitus inthe selected town of Qingpu District was significantly higher than the national average level in 1997. Urbanization and aging could relate to the increase of diabetes mellitus prevalence.
