An Analysis on Smoking Behavior and Related Factors among Military-job-oriented University Male Students

  • Objective To explore the impact of smoking behavior among military-job-oriented university male students.

    Methods Altogether 360 such students in a university in Lanzhou were selected and questionnaired about their smoking status. Of which 314 valid questionnaires were effective collected and the recovery rate was 91.2 percent. SPSS 11.5 software was used for statistical analysis.

    Results The average age of the studied students was (21.13& #177;1.26)years old. There were 78.66% of the studied male students had smoking attempt, 33.76% of them were present smokers, whereas 10.19 percent of them had addiction to smoking already. Most of them consumed 2-4 cigarettes per day. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that there were 3 factors affected the smoking behavior the most, namely:having some friends smoking (OR=3.642), frequently attend party (OR=2.558), and having rather sufficient cost of living (OR=3.071).

    Conclusion University period was the main stage of forming smoking addiction. Smoking was mainly due to social activities and mental depression, with a wide range of affecting factors. Control of smoking rate in military-job-oriented students should start from surrounding smoking population, personal attitudes and the cost of living.
