Purification Effects of Nine Residential Air Cleaners

  • Objective To evaluate the actual performance of residential air cleaners by major manufacturers in the consumer market.

    Methods The purification effects of 9 residential air cleaners were tested including particulate matter, formaldehyde, total volatile organic compound (TVOC), ammonia and dimethylbenzene in a 30-cubic-meter-volumn test chamber. The cleaning capability of the air cleaners were evaluated by comprehensive indexes of pollutants removal rate, clean air delivery rate (CADR), efficiency of clean etc.

    Results Among the tested air cleaners, those with 3 h gaseous pollutants (formaldehyde, TVOC, ammonia and dimethylbenzene)removal rate higher than 80% accounted for 55.6%, 88.9%, 33.3% and 88.9% respectively. In testing the cleaning efficiency of air cleaners for gaseous pollutants (formaldehyde, TVOC, ammonia and dimethylbenzene), those meeting the technical requirements of "Air Cleaners" (GB/T 18801-2008) (≥ Grade D) accounted for 77.7%, 88.9%, 55.6% and 100.0% respectively. For particulate matter, 88.9% of air cleaners met the technical requirements of GB/T 18801-2008 (Grade A).

    Conclusion The tested air cleaners show good performances in organic gaseous pollutants and particulate matter purification, but low ammonia cleaning capability.
