Investigation of Serum Bisphenol A Levels in 224 Schoolchildren in Pudong New Area

  • Objective To measure schoolchildren's serum level of bisphenol A in Pudong New Area, and to provide scientific evidence for health assessment of bisphenol A.
Methods First-grade pupils (n=224) were selected from three out of twenty-six nine-year-system schools and one out of five twelve-year-system schools in Pudong New Area. Bisphenol A levels in serum were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography after enzyme hydrolysis.
Results The detection rate of bisphenol A was 33.03% in the enrolled pupils. The concentrations of bisphenol A ranged from non-detectable to 38.04 μg/L (median < 0.139 μg/L; P75=4.15 μg/L). There was no statistical difference in the concentration or detection rate of bisphenol A among different gender, body mass index, and age groups (P>0.05).
Conclusion Bisphenol A is detected in the serum of selected schoolchildren, and several cases show relatively high values, which require more attention.
