Abstract
Universal salt iodization with potassium iodate has been implemented since 1994 in China, and the prevention and treatment of iodine deficiency disorders have made great achievements. However, the safety of potassium iodate remains a controversial topic. This paper introduced the physicochemical properties and safety of potassium iodate and concluded that at present the concentration of potassium iodate in table salt is relatively low in China and safe to human health.
