Effects of Chronic Multiple Stress on Pancreas β Cell Function in Rats

  • Objective To explore the effect of chronic multiple stress on pancreas β cell function in rats.

Methods Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into stress and control groups with twenty in each. Plasma glucose, insulin, insulin resistance, β cell function, and oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT)were measured and calculated. β cell apoptosis were detected using Tunel measurement.

Results Compared with the control group, the stress group had significantly higher fasting plasma glucose (FPG)and increased area under the curves of blood glucose levels (AUCG) (P < 0.001, P < 0.05). The fasting insulin(FINS), homeostasis model assessment(HOMA)-β, the areas under the curves of serum insulin levels(AUCI), ΔI30G30 and modified β cell index (MBCI)were significantly lower (P < 0.05, P < 0.01, P < 0.05, P < 0.05, P < 0.01)in the stress group than the control group. The apoptosis rate of the stress group was significantly higher than the control group (P < 0.001).

Conclusion It is observed that chronic multiple stress reduced the pancreas βcell function in rats.
