Pulmonary Function Analysis of Children in a Suburb School of Shanghai

  • Objective To analyze the pulmonary function of children in a suburb school of Shanghai.

    Methods Pulmonary function tests were performed among children of grade 3 to 5 from a suburb primary school in Shanghai.

    Results The results of multiple regression analysis showed that forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1.0), peak expiratory flow (PEF), forced expiratory flow (FEF) between 25% and 75% of FVC (FEF2575), FEF at 25% of FVC (FEF25%), FEF at 50% of FVC (FEF50%), and FEF at 75% of FVC (FEF75%) were positively correlated with weight and age, particularly with height, in both gender groups. Indicators such as FVC, FEV1.0, PEF, and FEF25% were remarkably higher in boys than in girls. The abnormal rate of pulmonary ventilation function was 17.9%, and 6.6% of the children had early small airway disorders.

    Conclusion Pulmonary function test is important in the evaluation of children's respiratory system, and the indicators of small airway are of great value to predict the abnormality of pulmonary function.
