Psycho-behavioral Status and Influencing Factors in Hui and Han Chinese Patients with Hypertension

  • Objective To investigate the psycho-behavioral status in Hui and Han people with hypertension and its influencing factors.

Methods A 1:1 matched case-control study was conducted among 108 pairs of Hui people and 102 pairs of Han people who were randomly chosen as subjects from 6 communities of Wuzhong city in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) and self-designed questionnaire were used to investigate their psycho-behavioral status and its influencing factors.

Results The family history of hypertension was the paramount factor for either Hui or Han people with hypertension (OR=2.147 and OR=4.380 respectively), while overstress was an independent risk factor for Hui people with hypertension (OR=1.783). It was found that the psychological state in both Hui and Han hypertensive patients was significantly worse compared with the controls (P < 0.01), and that in Hui hypertensive patients was significantly worse than that in Han hypertensive patients (P < 0.01).

Conclusion The present study demonstrates the poor psychological health status in Hui and Han hypertensive patients, indicating that it is necessary to deliver psychological intervention and behavior instruction to them, especially to the Hui hypertensive patients.
