Characteritics of 174 Acute Paraquat Poisoning Cases in A Provincial Hospital of Shandong

  • Objective To study the characteristics of acute paraquat poisoning and provide scientific bases for strategies to perform further prevention and therapy.

    Methods Medical history records of acute paraquat poisoning cases in a province-level hospital from 2003 to 2009 were collected in Shandong Province.Key information such as demographic information,therapeutics and outcome was extracted and put into computerized data base as well as deeply dug with statistical analyses.

    Results There were 174 hospitalized cases of acute paraquat poisoning due to oral swallow paraquat in this seven years.The fatality rate was 31.0%.There were gender (P<0.05) and occupation (P<0.05) differences among these patients,75.9% patients were peasants.Most poisoning cases occurred in summer.Final outcomes were affected by the paraquat amount intaken.The statistics showed that the treatment with absorbants and blood purification had no contribution to paraquat poisoning cure.

    Conclusion There is no particularly effective means in treatment of paraquat poisoning.More stringent regulation should be emphasized to reduce the occurrence of acute paraquat poisoning and comprehensive therapeutic measures should be taken in the clinic.
